Description
The Vancouver’s record of passage, makes it very unique; dozens of trans-ocean passages or voyages to the most remote cruising grounds, often crewed just by a husband and wife or a couple of friends, or totally at home in local waters and harbors. The enthusiastic reception of the original Vancouver 27 design led to demands for a larger version (Vancouver 32 & 34), which came from the board of the original designer, Robert Harris. The range was then augmented by the introduction of the Vancouver 36, satisfying the demands of experienced yachtsmen. The Vancouver 36 was built by Hidden Harbor Boatworks in Sarasota, Florida. The teak sole is 2′ thick, the hull 1 1/4″. The 36 is a blue water cruising machine. “Last Unicorn is the last boat built by Hidden Harbor and has been enjoyed by the original owner, who has taken her as far as Venezuela. The Vancouver 36 has her own distinctive style. The deep cockpit is very roomy, with high coamings and comfortable angles for leaning against. The helmsman’s position is ideal with easy access to winches, unencumbered movement around the wheel and clear vision to the stemhead.Designed from the outset for serious ocean passage making, the “Last Unicorn” combines sailing performance with excellent load carrying capability and comfortable motion in a seaway. Heavy displacement, and a long encapsulated keel gives excellent directional stability. The cutter rig has long been favoured by experienced cruising yachtsmen for its strength and versatility, as it provides good drive to windward and, because the sails are manageable and easy to reef, the optimum amount of sail is always available, whatever the weather conditions. This is a boat that’s meant to go places. The owners took the boat from Fort Lauderdale to Venezuela and back. spending 16 months doing so, and found the boat to be an excellent sailing vessel, at home in 20 knot winds, and very comfortable because of the design of the stern, the smallish cockpit, and the full keel with the skeg that attaches to the rudder.
Accomodations:
Going below, she has 6’4″ headroom with a step down into the salon. All the way forward is the head. That’s right, no V-berth forward, a surprise on a smaller boat. An interesting feature is the keel stepped mast. Harris inlined the mast with the main bulkhead forward. The design hides the mast away, cleaning up the interior lines. The salon has settees port and starboard which pull out to form comfortable sea berths at water level.Aft of the salon is the nav station. To starboard is a U-shaped galley. The galley is secure and versatile. All the way aft is the engine room, accessible through the companionway and a portside door behind the nav station.Cherry and formica interior2″ teak and holly soleAbundant shelving and storage throughout, easily accessible and well craftedBookshelves and storage cabinets above and outboard of both settees, lined with varnished cherry slatsMore lockers under setteesDual drop-leaf dining table has drawers for cutlery/serving pieces, and a liquor bin set in the table topOne of the lockers under the berth is accessible from the port setteeLocker under nav station is accessible from port setteePioneer stereo system with disc player and AM/FM tunerBarometer and clock mounted on salon bulkhead, visible from cockpitMicrofiber cushions (new 2008)
